Developmental Delays Fredericksburg, VA

Developmental Delays

As we develop from birth, there are common developmental “milestones” that are reached around certain ages. For example, the ability to walk, taking first steps is generally between months 9 and 12. Another is at age 4-7 months, babies typically start babbling and engage, smiling at the parents. When children don’t meet their normal milestones in a reasonable amount of time, a delay in development can start to become evident.

Often development delay can be seen in babies who seem stiff or floppy, have difficulty holding their head steady, can’t sit on their own or don’t respond to noises or smiles, after the appropriate ages to do so. In addition, as a child with development delay gets older, they may have difficulty engaging in normal play, seem clumsy, have difficulty with running and other more challenging activities.

Torticollis

Some babies do not have developmental delay but may have asymmetry in the neck, or have odd head shape called plagiocephaly which may need helmet therapy. Prior to getting the helmet, it is important to gain enough neck strength to tolerate the weight of the helmet 24/7.

Not only that, Hilltop Physical Therapy can help develop proper head shape by instilling sleep positions, strengthening programs, postural control exercises, and stretching programs to gain symmetry in the neck.

It takes a few visits versus several visits depending on the severity of the torticollis but earlier the treatment, the better and faster the recovery. Sometimes beyond 7 months of age, may cause permanent asymmetry. Some children may need surgical correction when older without much promise of recovery. Torticollis cannot be taken lightly due to its contribution to delaying mile stone, lagging symmetry in crawling, learning disabilities, and permanent disfigurement. Early physical therapy treatment prevents all complications as such and promotes normality and no dysfunction.
